Choosing the best whey protein

What is whey protein?

Whey protein powder is made from a mixture of proteins that are extracted from the liquid whey produced when milk is made into cheese.

It is regarded as one of the best protein sources because it is low in fats and carbs and provides a very good range of all 20 essential and non-essential amino acids.

Why should I use whey protein?

Whey protein is rich in beneficial branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) and glutamine. When consumed, the BCAAs and glutamine in whey protein get rapidly delivered to your muscles, where they promote "protein synthesis" which allows muscle tissue to repair and grow. That helps you build muscle and recover faster after training.

How do whey protein powders differ?

Whey protein powders fall into three main categories: whey protein concentrates, whey protein isolates and whey protein blends.

The amount of protein, fats and carbs in each type differs slightly, with the purest forms being slightly more expensive to buy.

What is whey protein concentrate?

Whey protein concentrate (such as GN Whey Protein 80™ and 100% Natural Whey) is whey protein in its basic form.

Our whey protein concentrate is of a very high quality and contains 80% protein, with the rest being made up of natural fats, carbs and minerals present in the whey.

A typical 25g serving of our unflavoured whey protein concentrate contains 20.4g of protein, 1.45g of fat and 1.2g of carbs. Whey protein concentrate is our best selling whey protein.

What is whey protein isolate?

Whey protein isolate (such as GN Whey Isolate 90™) is regarded as probably the best whey protein source on the market. This much purer form of whey protein undergoes an additional process compared to whey protein concentrate.

This reduces the amount of fat and carbs it contains, which thereby increases the amount of protein a serving provides to around 90%. A typical 25g serving of unflavoured whey protein isolate contains over 22g of protein, but only 0.17g of carbs and just 0.25g of fat.

It's therefore great if you're trying to keep fat and carb intake down, such as when you're dieting or cutting. However, the extra purification processes involved in its production make it a slightly more expensive product to produce.

What is a whey protein blend?

Whey protein blends (such as GN™ 100% Whey) are made from a mixture of whey protein sources.

GN™ 100% Whey is a premium product made only from whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate and it contains a little less fats and carbs than whey protein concentrate alone, plus beneficial enzymes that can help increase your body's uptake of the protein.

Other protein blends are also available that contain whey protein as an ingredient, however, they are often consist mainly of cheaper, less efficient protein sources, so it pays to check carefully before you buy a protein blend.

Unlike other suppliers, we always declare the exact quantity of each ingredient used - we don't use proprietary blends to conceal this important information from customers.
