The GoNutrition® guide to protein blends
Protein blends, unsurprisingly, are exactly just that - they’re a blend of two or more proteins, rather than just one individual source like you might find in say for example a whey protein concentrate.
The reason for using a protein blend is to take advantage of the individual benefits of each particular protein source. Different protein blends are appropriate for different physique goals such as cutting to reduce body fat, bulking up to add size and strength, or simply maintenance of lean muscle.
A protein blend should be used as a supplement instead of as a complete meal replacement. When used in conjunction with a clean diet, an appropriate training programme and following the suggested servings per day, a protein blend is a cost-effective and proven way to shape the body you want.

- GN Diet Whey
A popular protein blend with those wanting to lose weight and unwanted fat is GN Diet Whey. Containing three protein sources; whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and micellar casein, these protein sources from this protein blend are ideal for the dieting individual due to the characteristics of these protein sources.
Whey protein concentrate is whey in its basic form and is a reasonably low cost protein source, while still being low in fats and carbs, while providing an 80% protein content in its unflavoured form. Whey protein isolate is a slightly purer protein (90% protein content) that is lower fat than whey protein concentrate, and micellar casein is a slow release protein source to help the body’s muscles repair when the individual is sleeping.
The protein blend GN Diet Whey also contains added ingredients such as green tea extract and acetyl-l-carnitine, ingredients shown to help with fat loss.
As not everyone wants certain premium sources in their protein blend, GoNutrition has recently launched its Essential Formulas range that allow you to gain similar results to the core products with a reduced pouch price.
Diet Whey Essential for example sources its protein from whey protein concentrate and milk protein concentrate, another premium protein source which is itself a split of whey and casein (20:80 respectively) protein.
- Pure Mass
If you struggle to achieve your target calories per day from food or if you’re simply looking to bulk up, our weight gainer formula Pure Mass is a fantastic protein blend for adding high quality calories to your diet. There’s a huge 450 calories per serving with Pure Mass and 43g of protein, meaning your body won’t go hungry looking for fuel to increase size and mass.
Pure Mass uses the protein sources of whey protein concentrate, micellar casein and egg white albumen. Egg white protein is derived from pure egg whites, and is popular with bodybuilders because it is absorbed by the body at a rate between whey protein concentrate and micellar casein, making it a great sustained protein source.
Furthermore as it is derived from egg whites, it comes without the fat and cholesterol associated with egg yolk, helping to reduce unwanted fat when bulking.
Pure Mass Essential uses two protein sources, again whey protein concentrate and milk protein concentrate, meaning your body receives an instantly absorbable protein blend source as well as a slow release protein to keep your body fuelled throughout the day or during your sleep.
For those after a great all in one protein blend, they look no further than Solo for a source to help with lean muscle gain and general recovery. Solo also contains Creapure®, l Glutamine, l taurine, HMB, l Leucine and vitamin C, making it not only pre and post-workout protein blend, but also one that keeps on giving throughout the day.
The protein sources with Solo are whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate, with Solo Essentials eschewing whey protein isolate to only use whey protein concentrate. Solo Essentials however still contains added creatine monohydrate to help with explosive performance and HMB to help promote recovery and prevent muscle breakdown.
- GN 100% Whey
Lastly, GN 100% Whey is a leading protein blend that features whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate as its protein sources.
Many companies with a similarly named protein blend use just a sprinkling of whey protein isolate to allow them to cite the inclusion of this protein source, but not at GoNutrition®. GN 100% Whey contains an 80:20 ratio of whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate respectively.
Additionally, there are added ingredients to GN 100% Whey such as DigeZyme® Lactospore® which have been shown to aid with the digestion of protein into your body.
