What is Quinoa?
Quinoa is a popular grain and a great alternative to rice. It is a complete source of protein, containing all of the essential amino acids. It is also low in fats and a source of low GI carbohydrates. Quinoa has been cultivated since ancient times and can be grown in a full spectrum of colours, the three most common types are white, red and black. Our Organic Red Quinoa has a characteristic slightly nutty taste and fluffy texture when cooked.
How can this grain benefit me?
Organic Red Quinoa contains 12.5g protein per 100g and is completely suitable for vegans. The protein can help with the development, maintenance and repair of lean muscle mass. The low GI carbs provide a sustained release of energy which can be used to fuel your workouts and keep you focussed throughout the day. The combination of protein and slow digesting carbohydrates helps to increase feelings of satiety and can prove to be a sensible switch of carbohydrates when dieting.
Who should use Organic Red Quinoa?
This grain is suitable for anyone looking for a slower digesting alternative to white rice. It causes a much slower rise in blood glucose than other grains, so helps to avoid spikes of insulin. This is especially suitable for anyone looking for a slower, steadier release of energy, instead of the peaks and troughs caused by higher GI carbohydrate sources. Quinoa is also naturally low in fats and sugars.
How should I use Organic Red Quinoa?
To cook, we recommend using two parts water to one part Quinoa, bringing to the boil and simmering for around 15 minutes until light and fluffy. This grain is the perfect partner to casseroles, stir fries, salads and meat dishes, it can even be blended into soups to act as a thickener and improve the texture.
