Introducing our new Tribulus terrestris extract
Tribulus terrestris extract first became popular with powerlifters in the 1970s. GoNutrition's New Product Development manager Tommy Gaughan explains how it's said to work.
What is Tribulus terrestris?
Tribulus terrestris is a plant that is native to the Mediterranean and South Asia. It has a been used for centuries as a herbal supplement in Chinese and Indian medicine as it was thought that Tribulus terrestris extract could increase fertility and libido. However, it wasn't until the 1970s when Tribulus terrestris extract was attributed to the success of the Bulgarian Olympic powerlifting team, that it became popular as a sports supplement.
How does Tribulus terrestris extract work?
The active components in Tribulus terrestris are saponins. There are two main saponins which are attributed to Tribulus' performance benefits and these are called called furostanol glycosides and spirostanol glycosides. They are primarily found in the leaf of the Tribulus terrestris plant. When consumed these saponins can help to increase the body's production of luteinizing hormone which in turn can increase natural testosterone production.
Why is Tribulus terrestris used by body builders and athletes?
Tribulus terrestris extract is reported to increase muscle mass, power and strength through increase natural testosterone production. This has led to its use by many bodybuilders, power lifters and athletes as a performance enhancing supplement.
