What is Creatine?

Creatine is a compound that is involved in producing energy stores in our muscles. About half of our creatine requirement is naturally produced by our bodies, however we must obtain the other half through the diet. In the diet creatine is usually found in red meat, however those that perform high intensity and explosive exercise require higher levels of creatine and therefore creatine monohydrate supplementation is recommended. How does creatine work?

The muscles store a chemical called phosphocreatine which is used for explosive exercise lasting up to around ten seconds, for example a set of 6-8 reps on bench press. Creatine is used by the muscle to increase phosphocreatine stores and therefore increase the energy levels stored in the muscles helping you to lift that extra few kilos or push out that extra rep.

How should I use Creatine Tablets?

Each creatine tablet provides 1000mg of creatine monohydrate. It is recommended to take five grams of creatine per day, therefore we suggest five tablets daily to meet this requirement. Creatine is best taken approximately 30-60 minutes before training. You also need to take creatine on non-training days to keep your muscle ATP stores topped up. On non-training days take your creatine tablets at around the same time of day as when you train.

Some people choose to ‘load’ creatine taking 20g per day for the first 5 days in order to saturate the muscles, and then use 5g daily to keep them topped up. Evidence is yet to conclude whether this is more beneficial than just taking 5g of creatine daily.
